Water is the very first aliment for our babies after mothers’ milk, so it should be pure and safe.
However, there are waters that are pure and healthy and there are waters that can actually harm our little ones.
Water choice is as important as milk formula
Water is at least as important as the infant formula. Besides sodium, calcium, magnesium and other salts, there can be something else in the bottled waters, something not mentioned on the labels: NITRATES.
Nitrates are fertilizers. Good for plants but not humans, in large quantities, nitrates are harmful for our babies.
We find them in nature and they are used in agriculture. From this massive use, comes the pollution of the aquifer, so Nitrates get into the BOTTLED WATER. They are tasteless, colorless and odorless and no, most of the time they are not mentioned on the label.
NITRATES are heavy oxidants. They are undesirable substances, harmful for human health.
Babies are the most vulnerable to nitrate contamination because their micro bacterial flora is not developed yet to fight them. Once ingested, the nitrates are converted into nitrites – much more toxic than the nitrates. The ingestion of a larger quantity can provoke from gastric problems, infectious diarrhea, urticarias and rashes – to methemoglobinemia.
Methemoglobinemia or blue baby syndrome is the most dangerous disorder that the nitrate contamination can cause in infants. It firstly manifests by breathing problems caused by the inadequate oxygen flow through blood, leading quickly to asphyxiation, and subsequently to the death of the baby. This is why it is so important to prepare the baby food using water having the lowest possible nitrate content.
We have to say that boiling the water for preparing the infant formula is not a solution, even more; it increases the concentration of nitrates and implicitly the toxicity.
According to the doctors, nitrates and nitrites are an important danger not only for infants but also for children up to the age of 10 and even for adults.
The risk is high and could cause intoxication, urticarias and more seriously, they can interfere in the thyroid activity.
In many countries around Europe, the legislation says that the maximum limit of nitrate content in water for infants should be less than 2.27 mg/l NO3-N, while the adult limit is 11.3 mg/l.
There is no regulation regarding nitrates and infants in the U.S.
The Maximum Contaminant Level for Nitrates is 10mg/L of nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) for all waters.
There are studies that say that especially little babies under 6 months old can become seriously ill if exposed to nitrate levels above 2.27 mg/L.
NITRATES can provoke:
◦Blue baby syndrome (MD P.G. Sattelmacher. Federal Health Agency, Germany – Methemoglobinemia caused by nitrates in drinking water.)
◦Risk for Neural Tube Defects (Lisa A. Croen, Karen Todoroff, and Gary M. Shaw – Maternal Exposure to Nitrate from Drinking Water and Diet and Risk for Neural Tube Defects and Jean D. Brender, Peter J. Weyer – Prenatal Nitrate Intake from Drinking Water and Selected Birth Defects in Offspring of Participants in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study).
◦Oral Cleft Defects and limb deficiencies in offspring (Jean D. Brender, Peter J. Weyer – Prenatal Nitrate Intake from Drinking Water and Selected Birth Defects in Offspring of Participants in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study).
AQUA Carpatica Natural Spring Water has NO NITRATE content, being undetectable at the spring and that makes is absolutely safe for our babies.
Also, it has NO SODIUM, as recommended by pediatricians for babies, so it can be used to prepare the milk formula.
